SEIU Endorsement
SEIU Endorses Florida Rep. Kendrick Meek for U.S. Senate
Tallahassee [2/16/09] - U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Miami, announced today that he has been endorsed by the Florida Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in his campaign for the United States Senate. Meek is running to replace Sen. Mel Martinez, who is retiring.
“I am honored to have the backing of Florida’s SEIU,” Meek said. “The SEIU and I have worked hand-in-hand on so many important issues, from class size to quality healthcare. I look forward to continuing to work together to meet the needs of Florida’s families.”
Meek has a strong record on other issues important to working Floridians. On Jan. 27, Meek voted in favor of the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which gives employees more opportunity to address unfair pay. He also voted to strengthen equality in the workplace by supporting the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Meek supports the right of workers to unionize and more funding for job training and unemployment benefits.
The SEIU is the fastest-growing union in the Americas. It represents about 45,000 active and retired employees in Florida.
